Joel Stephen “Steve” Smith departed this life Sunday, April 27, at the age of 69 years, 2 months, 10 days. He was born in Paris on Feb. 17, 1945, the son of the late Elmo Lavern and Cecil Laverne Stockdale Smith. On Aug. 26, 1967, he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Davis, who preceded him in death Feb. 20, 2011.
Steve served as principal at Hardin County Schools for 20 years and was supervisor of Secondary Education at the Hardin County Board of Education. An active member in the community, he held many memberships, including: the Pickwick Bass Anglers, Woodmen of the World, West Tennessee director of Tennessee Bass Foundation, and a founding member of the Pickwick Guide Services. He was a coach for North Elementary Athletics and Junior High School, and a play-by-play announcer for Hardin County Athletics. Steve was also a member of East End United Methodist Church, where he also served as chairman of the board and was a Sunday school teacher.
Mr. Smith is survived by his son, Justin McCoy Smith and wife Karen of Goodlettsville, and nieces Stephanie and Jennifer Garcia.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Sharon Dale Smith Garcia.
Services will be held Thursday, May 1, at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Savannah with Dr. Roger Hopson, Mary Foote, Helen Hamilton and Dennis Usner officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens in Savannah.
Pallbearers were Erin Alexander, Bobby McAdams, Bobby Cromwell, Alex Homra, Logan Collier, Levin Edwards, Chris Bell and Michael Davis.
Honorary pallbearers were Ben Holbert, Jimmy Mitchell, Kenneth Smith, Pat Stihel, Anthony Gilchrist, Charlie Cromwell, Donnie McDaniel, Brad Jones, Bobby Hollis, Gene Allen Reed, Micky Alexander and Wayne Wallace.
