Rufus Akers

Rufus Akers, 80, of Savannah, died Tuesday, May 1.

He was born in Maury County, Tenn., the son of the late John Rufus Akers Sr. and Rosa LaRue Akers. He was united in marriage to Pearl Stutts, who survives.

Mr. Akers worked at Ronnie Smith’s Chevrolet as the parts manager. He retired Dec. 31, 1996. He also worked for Emmett Yeiser Sr. in 1957. He was a member of New Life Pentecostal Church, Aladdin Knights International, and International Willow Society. Mr. Akers served time in the Army and Korean War.

Services were held on Friday, May 4, at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah with Bob Moore, Rev. Gerald Davis and Larry Holland officiating. Burial followed in the Memory Gardens at Savannah.

In addition to his wife Pearl Akers of Savannah, he is survived by one son, Michael Akers of Shreveport, La.; two sisters, Ruby Marlene Hurt of Clarksville, Tenn. and Christine Hall of Columbia, Tenn.; one grandchild.

He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Melba Carroll, Elizabeth Young, Bonnie Carroll and Betty Henson.
