Rex Evans Rex Evans, 89, of Clifton, died Tuesday, April 24, in Savannah. He was born in Hardin County, the son of the late John Young and Lantie Dean Rose Evans. He was united in marriage to Mary Lou Baxter, who preceded him in death. He was later united in marriage to Carrie Long Jones, who survives. Mr. Evans was a tow boat engineer from 1966 to 1976. He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II. Mr. Evans served in Italy where he was wounded twice in combat and received two purple hearts. He farmed from 1945 to 1959, drove school bus from 1951 to 1959, worked for Clifton Construction from 1960 to 1966. Mr. Evans was a member of Mt. Carmel Methodist Church and a member of Clifton Lodge 173 F & AM. Services were held on Thursday, April 26, at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah with Joel Wallace and Larry Janes officiating. Burial followed in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery at Hardin County. In addition to his wife, Carrie of Waynesboro, he is survived by one daughter, Judy Cannon of Waynesboro; one son, Mike Evans of Clifton; five grandchildren, four great grandchildren; two sisters, Robbie Ricketts and Ruth Haggard, both of Savannah; one brother, Jack Evans of Savannah. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Marlan Evans and Johnnie Evans; and five brothers, Royal, J.E., James W., Curtis and Howard Evans.
