Julia Marie Mills, of Jackson, Tennessee, departed this life on Saturday, Dec. 31, at the age of 81 years, 4 months, and 14 days.
She was born in Hardin County on Aug. 17, 1935, the daughter of the late Glenn Andrew and Myrtie Marie Harris Mills.
Julia Mills was a teacher of local legend in McNairy County. Every day held the opportunity for a teaching experience, and she never shied away from trying something new. She laughed often and deep. She noticed the people others overlooked, and went out of her way to help those in need. She never watched the same movie twice, because then she might have missed something else. She never traveled as an outsider, and she broke the rules she thought silly and laughed at the consequences. Julia had a true appreciation for the arts and supported those who pursued them. She loved the written word, to read it aloud, and to memorize her favorite poems.
She is survived by her son Joel, whom she called her Precious Treasure, and his wife, Deborah of Jackson, Tennessee; grandchildren, Christina Frey and her fiancé Jeremy Hopkins, and Rebecca Istvan and her husband Michael; and great-grandchild, Liam Istvan.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Glenda Jane “Choppie” Mills and an infant sister.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 11 a.m., at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Adamsville in Adamsville, Tennessee.
