John Sloan

John Curtiss Sloan, 80, of Johnson City, Tenn., died Saturday, March 6, at John M. Reed Nursing Home, Limestone, following a lengthy illness.

He was the son of the late C.F. and Ruth Hailey Sloan.

Mr. Sloan began his career in law enforcement in 1950 with the Tennessee Highway Patrol where he served until becoming an agent with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation in 1967 where he retired as a special agent in 1989. Following his retirement, Mr. Sloan was employed with SSS Bonding Company. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and was the founder of the F.O.P. Lodge 37 in Shiloh, the Johnson City Loyal Order of the Moose, the Johnson City Masonic Lodge 486 F&AM, the Tennessee Highway Patrol Retired Officers Association and numerous other law enforcement organizations. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.

The funeral service will be Thursday, March 11, at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Savannah, with burial following at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Sloan is survived by his wife, Jeannie Rickman Sloan of Savannah; one son, Curt Sloan; two daughters, Tanya Wilkins and Betty Ruth Poff; one sister, Marilyn "Connie" Thomas; five grandchildren; one great-grandson.

He was also preceded in death by an infant son, William Sloan; and a sister, June Sloan.
