John Melson Sr.
John Edgar Melson Sr., Collinwood, was born Sept. 25, 1921, in Lutts, Tenn., the son of the late Jay and Pearl Burns Melson. He was united in marriage to Irene Whitten on Sept. 21, 1944.
Mr. Melson was a retired truck driver and a member of Houston Baptist Church, Waynesboro, being saved at his home on Rayburn Creek and baptized in 1953. Mr. Melson served in the United States Army during WWII and departed this life on Jan. 29, at his home at the age of 91 years, 4 months, 4 days.
He is survived by his wife, Irene Whitten Melson, Collinwood; sons, John Edgar Melson Jr. (Charlene), Anchorage, Alaska, Kenneth Melson (Lorene), Waynesboro; daughters, Linda Griggs (Barney), Waynesboro, Carylon Banks(John E), Cypress Inn, Tenn., Brenda Thompson (Dwight), Waynesboro, Judy Inman (Donnie), Collinwood, Norma Brewer, Collinwood; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and was expecting one in June; five nephews; seven nieces.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Melson was preceded in death by sons-in-law, Freddy Inman, Troy Brewer; brothers, Jessie J. Melson, Joda Melson; sisters, Jewel Stricklin, Mable Melson.
Services were Saturday, Feb. 2, at 3 p.m., at Shackelford Funeral Directors Chapel, Waynesboro, with John E. Banks and Johnny B. Burns officiating. Burial with military rites was in Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Collinwood, with Shackelford Funeral Directors, Wayne County, directing. Pallbearers were grandsons and great-grandsons were honorary pallbearers.
