James DeFord (4-3-14) service 4-7-14

James William DeFord was born in Savannah on July 20, 1934, the son of the late Lawrence Aldridge and Ana Louise Riddell DeFord.

Mr. DeFord served his country for 20 years in the United States Army where he was a crypto-analyst working in Intelligence. He also had worked for Pickwick Landing State Park. Mr. DeFord has lived in Japan, Texas, California, Okinawa and Turkey and he traveled worldwide while in the Army. He enjoyed fishing, camping and he was an avid outdoorsman.

Mr. DeFord departed this life Thursday, April 3, in Birmingham, Ala., at the age of 79 years, 8 months and 14 days.

He is survived by his daughter, Teresa Hulen and her husband Gene of Vernon, Ala.; two grandchildren, Amy Kylus and Danielle Weathers; three great-grandchildren, Christopher Kylus, Kaitlyn Kylus and Colton James Weathers; sister, Peggy Gilliand of Pickwick Dam; nephew, James Hooper; niece Judy Franks; great-nephew, Jimmy Dan Cossey and great-niece, Anna Marie Cossey.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Waters.

Services were held Monday, April 7, at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah with Jimmy C. Horton officiating. Burial followed at Memory Gardens in Savannah.
