George Bumpus Sr.

George Bumpus, Sr. was born Oct. 3, 1929, in Hardin County, the son of the late Bert and Gertrude Sowell Bumpus.

He was united in marriage to Opal V. Hassell on May 13, 1949. Mrs. Bumpus preceded him in death on Oct. 2, 1999.

Mr. Bumpus had worked for Hassell & Dowdy, Dowdy & Lacher, Riverboat Sand & Gravel Company, and Harbert Construction/TVA. He was a deacon at the St. Mark Baptist Church.

Mr. Bumpus departed this life on Nov. 3, in Savannah, at the age of 82 years, 1 month.

He is survived by a daughter, Dineta B. Williamson; two sons, George Edward Bumpus Jr. and David A. Bumpus; four grandchildren, Jonathan Bumpus, Theda Bumpus, Lakeisha Hopson, and Tonice Davis; seven great-grandchildren, Jaylen Hopson, William Shelton, Marcus Davis, Bryce Davis, Ashton Davis, Rien Bumpus and Aaron Bumpus.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Bumpus was preceded in death by one daughter, Deborah Barnes; three brothers, Eulis G. (Pete) Bumpus, Harvey Bumpus, and Lee Bumpus; three sisters, Mildred White, Lizzie Sparks and Betty Tucker; a grandchild, Rufus Nelson Hopson Jr.

Services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 1 p.m., at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah with Rev. Eddie Payne, Rev. Arthur Cunningham, Rev. Dr. Roger Hopson officiating. Burial followed in the Memory Gardens at Savannah.
