Gene Douglas Davidson, 88, of Clifton, Tennessee, departed this life on Sunday, March 9. He was born in 1936 to the union of the late James Russ and Mae Tom Whitby Davidson.
After graduating from Ole Miss, Mr. Davidson owned several businesses including Davidson’s Drugs, Davidson’s Sod Farm and rebuilt and operated the Clifton Marina, where he met many new friends and enjoyed the annual visits of several boaters on the Tennessee River until he sold the marina in 2019.
Mr. Davidson led a very active life in politics and was a lifelong public servant. He served as Mayor of Waynesboro and was also elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives. He served on the Wayne County Election Commission for many years and was an active member of the Wayne County Democratic Party and served as chairman for several years. He was an avid supporter of the high school sports teams in Wayne County and a big fan of Ole Miss football and basketball.
His greatest pleasure in life was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and he proudly supported them in everything they accomplished.
He is survived by two daughters, Amy Sawyer-Walker (Cary) of Fairview, Tennessee; Jana Davidson of Brentwood, Tennessee; one son, Doug Davidson (Regina) of Bellevue, Tennessee; two sisters, Sibyl Haggard of Waynesboro, Tennessee; Barbara Carman (Bud) of Franklin, Tennessee; seven grandchildren, Daniel Sawyer (Lesley), Carrie Sawyer, Matthew Haughey, Sarah Haughey, Ian Davidson, Jonathan Sawyer, Autumn Davidson; and three great-grandchildren, McKinley Sawyer, Bowen Sawyer, and Ripp Sawyer.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a son, Thomas Russ Davidson.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 13, at Philadelphia Baptist Church, with Cary Crews officiating. Interment followed at Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations be given to The Butterfly Foundation, The Janet J. Smith Foundation, or The Alzheimer’s Association.
