Evelyn Smith

Evelyn Pickens Smith, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., was born in Savannah, on Aug. 8, 1921, the daughter of the late Samuel and Dee Henson Pickens.

On July 13, 1963, she was united in marriage to Richard Martin Smith, who preceded her in death on April 6, 2004.

Mrs. Smith had also lived in Jackson, Tenn., Cape Girardeau, Mo., Oswego, Ill., Aurora, Ill., and Monterey, Tenn. She had worked for Western Electric, International Shoes, Milan Arsenal and Bemis Cotton Mill. Mrs. Smith was a simple, yet elegant woman who enjoyed gardening, southern cooking, sewing, and enjoying every moment she had with her loving family.

Mrs. Smith departed this life on Sept. 11, at the age of 89 years, 1 month, 3 days.

Mrs. Smith is survived by three daughters, Cynthia Marie Pickens Simmons of Eustis, Fla., Brenda Diane Pickens Borneman of Aurora, Ill. and Janet Louise Smith Bush of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Elvin (Jake) and James Pickens; three sisters, Edith (Betty) Tolbert, Lucille (Cindy) Williams and Johnnie Ruth Webb.

Services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 4:30 p.m., at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah with Baker Bush and Jadon Bush officiating. Burial was in the Wilkerson Cemetery at Hardin County, Tenn.
