As another round of pipe-breaking frigid temperatures moves in, Savannah Utility Department water customers outside the city limits should immediately prepare for a complete interruption of service.
Friday morning, SUD announced that “due to continued leaks and capacity loss in our water system, we are activating the City of Savannah’s Emergency Response Plan in an attempt to isolate immediate leakage and maintain service to our critical customers (Hospital, Nursing Homes, Jail, etc.)”
The department said that as a result, service will be interrupted to locations not served by the Jackson Street tank. Customers in affected areas should turn off the power to their water heaters until service is restored to prevent damage to heating elements.
SUD is continuing to urge customers to report any active leaks on their property, or any water main leaks. Include the service address and call 731-925-4216 or send an email to utilities@cityofsavannah.org.
“We are working tirelessly to get the system back up and running, and appreciate your patience during this extreme weather event,” the department said.
Other area water departments, including Adamsville, Saltillo and First Utility District, are also experiencing serious service issues due to water line breaks.
