Virgie Mullins

Virgie Howard Mullins was born April 29, 1926, in Decoy, Ky., the daughter of the late Robert "Bob" and Docia Shepherd Howard.

She was united in marriage to Clay Mullins on Nov. 10, 1945. Mr. Mullins preceded her in death on Aug. 1, 2006.

Mrs. Mullins was a hairdresser for more than 50 years. During World War II, she was a production worker for Kingsbury Ordinance Plant in Indiana. Mrs. Mullins taught Sunday school for New Pleasant Grove Freewill Baptist Church in Savannah, and was the wife of a Freewill Baptist minister for 40 plus years. She was very hospitable, opening her home to many who were less fortunate. She worked as a volunteer for Rhema Shelter and the food bank in Savannah, making many trips to Jackson to pick up food for distribution. One of her most important contributions was her willingness and desire to talk to others about their salvation. Mrs. Mullins loved to fish, and was a good cook and seamstress. In recent years, she had attended Olivet Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Savannah.

Mrs. Mullins departed this life on Thursday, April 11, in Savannah, at the age of 86 years, 11 months, 13 days.

She is survived by a daughter, Cindy Lou Vickery and husband Jimmy of Savannah; two grandchildren, Lisa Beckham and husband Mark, and Susan Franks and husband Dennis, all of Savannah; three great-grandchildren, Jessica Beckham, Blake Franks, and Sarah (Franks) Bickings and husband Cory; a great-great-grandchild, Brentley Wayne Bickings; nine sisters, Hazel Dobson of Decoy, Ky., Nokie Russell of Winamac, Ind., Helen Jenczalik and husband Bob of Knox, Ind., Utella Ritchie and husband Clyde of Winamac, Ind., Sarah Manns of Winamac, Ind., Katherine Morse and husband Howard of Mishawaka, Ind., Linda Russell and husband Gerald of Winamac, Ind., Matilda Fullerton and husband John Higgs of Dupont, Wash., and Margaret Strange and husband Paul of Tuscumbia, Ala.; a brother, Bobby Howard of North Judson, Ind; her beloved red dachshund, Kiesha; and many extended family and friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Mullins was preceded in death by two sisters, Carrie Stephens and Geneva Licker.

Services were held on Saturday, April 13, at 3 p.m. at Olivet Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Savannah with Duwayne Pounds officiating. Burial followed in the Neill Cemetery at Savannah.
