Savannah is honoring U.S. military veterans with a parade and ceremonies on Saturday, Nov. 9.
The celebration preceding the official Veterans Day holiday two days later starts with a wreath ceremony at the Hardin County Courthouse at 9 a.m.
Veterans and their spouses can next participate in a procession from the courthouse on Main Street to nearby Veterans Memorial Park at 50 Hanna Boulevard, for additional ceremonies honoring those who have served to protect the nation’s freedom.
Savannah Main Street program Executive Director Stephanie Timbes invites residents to come out in support.
“We encourage our community to come line Main Street, wave flags, and express their gratitude for the sacrifices made by our veterans.
“Let’s unite in paying tribute and showing appreciation for these courageous heroes who have defended our freedoms,” Timbes said.
A ceremony at the park saluting veterans immediately follows the procession.
Spectators can follow the procession to Veterans Park on foot, or park vehicles in nearby lots at First Baptist Church and Tractor Supply.
The ceremony includes a speaker from each military branch who will share details about the branch they served. Hardin County Veterans Service Officer Shad Devillier will present the C.D. Rickman Award at the conclusion of the speakers’ remarks.
There will also be a flag raising ceremony and a gun salute by the members of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post.
Veterans Day is on Nov. 11, but many communities throughout the U.S. hold special events honoring veterans the weekend prior to the official holiday.
