Gordon Clay "Pete" Smith, 82, of Selmer, formerly of Crump, died Saturday, May 28, in Selmer.

He was born in Hot Springs, Ark., the son of the late Millard Gileth and Bertha Page Smith. He was united in marriage to Edda Jo Kinchen, who survives.

 

Mr. Smith helped log the Tennessee river bottoms in preparation for the construction of the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Pickwick Dam, and helped his father Millard electrify many homes in Hardin County. He continued his career as an electrician and plumber, but also held other careers, such as blacksmith and oil refinery worker.

A private service will be held at a later date.

In addition to his wife, Edda Jo Smith of Selmer, he is survived by a daughter, Deborah Hill of Selmer; a son, Dr. William Clay Kinchen Smith of Gainesville, Fla.; three grandchildren; and a sister, Wilma Dale Hunter of Memphis.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Lonell Seay; and a brother, Raymond Smith.
