Peggy Sue Roach, 86, of Morris Chapel, departed this earthly life and joined her “heavenly” family members on Friday, Jan. 31. This is when a bell rang and an angel gained her wings. Peggy Sue was born in McNairy County on Nov. 2, 1938, the daughter of the late Tom and Gladys Moore Barnes.
Her childhood was mostly spent in the McNairy County area. She married Rudolph Cambell on Aug. 20, 1955, and they resided in Galloway, Tennessee. They divorced about 1967; at which time, Peggy moved to Memphis, Tennessee. Here she met Glenn Rooker, and they were married on March 31, 1972. She and Glenn divorced sometime in 1979.
She resided in Memphis until she decided that she needed to move back to Morris Chapel, Tennessee, to take care of her mother. In 1996 she met James Roach and they were married on May 24, 1997, at Morris Chapel Baptist Church. At this time, she moved to Reagan, Tennessee and lived there until James passed on Nov. 12, 2018.
In 2019 she moved back to her home in Morris Chapel and resided there until she had an accident on Oct. 24, 2023. Because she knew that she could not live alone; she moved to Millington, Tennessee, to live with her niece Sherry. She lived until she passed on January 31st.
As a young person, she was a hard worker. She chopped and picked cotton. She was known to pick as cotton as much as the adults. When she moved to Memphis, she had several jobs. She worked at Frito Lay, a meat packing company, and she even took a computer class and had a job key punching. When she moved back to Morris Chapel, she worked at Adamsville Nursing Home in the kitchen as a cook and she worked as caregiver until she and James were married.
Peggy did not have any children, but she thought of all of nieces and nephews as very special people in her life.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Gladys Barnes; her husband, James Roach; her sisters, Junell Clausel and Shirley Johnson; brothers-in-law, Johnny Clausel and Bobby Dee Johnson; nieces, Dean Clausel and Gayle Johnson; nephews, Gary and Jerry Clausel, and nephews-in-law, Glen Louis Smith and John Wright, Sr., Also, she had several great-nieces and nephews that preceded her in death.
She is survived by her brother, Bobby Barnes (Betty); nieces, Sherry Wright and Diane Clausel; and nephews, Larry Clausel (Joyce), Bobby Johnson Jr. (Lisa) and Michael Barnes (Kelly). She also has several great-nieces and nephews, whom she loved very much.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Morris Chapel Baptist Church in Morris Chapel, Tennessee, with Mike Moore and Michael Barnes officiating. Burial followed at Milledgeville Cemetery in Milledgeville, Tennessee.
