Margaret Alley Wheat was born Oct. 7, 1930, the daughter of the late Oliver Earl and Myrtle Moore Alley. She was married to Willard Wheat for 48 years before he preceded her in death on Oct. 24, 2001.
Mrs. Wheat graduated from Frank Hughes High School, Class of 1949. Her career was in banking and she retired with the People’s Bank of Clifton. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Clifton and a past Worthy Matron and officer in the Grand Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, Clifton Lodge 355. After her retirement, she enjoyed traveling, reading and dancing. She was a member of the Riverbend Cloggers and enjoyed dancing with them for local nursing homes and for parades. She was also a wonderful cook and she loved her family.
Mrs. Wheat departed this life  Sunday, Dec. 29, at the Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia, at the age of 83 years, 2 months and 22 days.
She is survived by three daughters, Janice Welch and her husband, Robert of Munford, Beth Gaughan and her husband, Tim of Holly Springs, N.C. and Lana Westmoreland and her husband, David of Smyrna; five grandchildren, Ryan Welch and his wife Sally, Jay Westmoreland, Jordan Westmoreland, Mary Gaughan and Patrick Gaughan; four great-grandchildren, Margaret Welch, Alyson Keller, James Westmoreland and Reece Welch; three siblings, Katherine Pleasant and her husband, Opal of Savannah, J.W. Alley and his wife, Wilton of Linden and Sue Alley of Savannah; brother-in-law, Jerry Riddell of Savannah and sister-in-law, Ann Alley of St. Clair, Mich.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by siblings, Oliver Earl Alley Jr., Mary Ann Riddell and Charles Alley.
Services were held Thursday, Jan. 2, in Clifton, with Dr. Jim Roundtree and Tracy Love officiating. Burial followed at Clifton Cemetery in Clifton.
