John A. Spencer, 83, of Statonville, Tennessee, departed this life on Sunday, March 9. He was born on Jan. 22, 1942, in Hardin County, Tennessee, the son of the late Willie K. and Mazie Irene Horton Spencer. On Sept. 8, 1973, he was united in marriage to Sue Terry, who survives. Mr. Spencer honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy. He worked as an iron worker and boiler maker for Procter & Gamble and was a member of Iron Workers Union #103. John enjoyed hunting, fishing, and looking for arrowheads. He was a member of West Shiloh Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sue Spencer; daughters, Mitzy VanDuyn, Cindi Bowman, and Susan Nicholson; son, John Spencer II; brother, Jimmy Spencer; grandchildren, Hannah Nicholson, Matthew Tansy, Abigail Tansy, Alexis Shanks, Mariah Shanks, and Zachary Bowman; and great-grandchildren, Krowley Shanks, Coulson Shanks, Julian VanDuyn, and Teegan VanDuyn. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sisters, Janice Wilbanks and Rebecca Bridges and brothers, Billy Spencer and Jerry David Spencer. Memorial services were held on Friday, March 14, at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Savannah, Tennessee, with Steve Littleton officiating. Burial followed at Mt. Hermon Cemetery in Savannah, Tennessee.
