Harvey Elvin Moore

Harvey Elvin Moore of Homer, Alaska, died Saturday, Aug. 4, at the age of 89.

He was born in Leapwood, McNairy County, the son of the late James and Jessie Horton Moore. He was married to Dorothy Ellen Corcoran, who survives.

Moore became the architect of a new and successful athletics program in Jefferson County high schools, where he coached at Wheatridge High in the 1960s. As a World war II Veteran, Moore served in the Army’s 83rd infantry division and was in the third wave at Omaha Beach. He fought many battles including Belgium’s Battle of the Bulge, and participated in the liberation of Langenstein, a subdivision of Buchenwald Concentration Camp in Germany.

Harvey Moore achieved many awards as a high school basketball player in Tennessee. While attending Regis College in 1949, he was awarded small college all-American. He earned his nickname Harv the ‘Hook’ Moore with his impressive left handed hook shot. He became the head coach at his alma mater, Regis College from 1951 to 1959. He next accepted the head coaching position at Wheatridge high school, from 1960 to 1969, where he achieved two state AAA championships, and was honored as coach of the year several times. Harvey also worked summers as auditor for the Colorado Racing Commission at several race tracks around the state.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy Ellen of Homer, Alaska, a daughter, Kathleen Sue Taylor- Perez of North Platte, Neb., and a son, Timothy Joseph Moore of Homer, Alaska. as well as seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Harvey E. Moore Jr; four sisters, Lucille Lipford, Irene Murphy, Ruth Mathis and Georgia Dennis; two brothers, Jack Moore and Albie Moore.
