Emmet Arnold Nichols III

Emmet Arnold Nichols III, Nick to family and friends, 90, of Savannah, departed this life on
Saturday, July 19. Nick was born in Greenwood, Mississippi on June 24, 1935, the only child of the late Emmet A.
Nichols Jr. and Atheal J. Nichols.
He was united in marriage to the late Dr. Chloe H. Nichols of Jackson, Mississippi, on Aug 22, 1959, while both were students of Mississippi State University.
Nick graduated from Greenwood High School in 1953. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy a few
months after graduation. During his four year enlistment, he served as a fire control technician
on a LST ship (Tom Greene County) in the Western Pacific. The ship’s home port was San
Diego, California. Nick visited Japan and Hawaii during his time in the Navy. After his naval service, Nick entered his freshman year of college at Mississippi State
University. He met his future wife Chloe at a Christmas party in 1958, and they married the
following summer.
After college graduation, Nick worked at the Walker Manufacturing company in Aberdeen,
Mississippi. Nick and Chloe had their first child, Stewart, while they lived in Aberdeen.
Nick entered the National Park Service (NPS) in the summer of 1966 and served as a
National Park Ranger in the Pacific Northwest and Southeastern states. Nick and Chloe’s
second son, Cameron, was born in Port Angeles, Washington. Nick retired from the NPS at
Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, in 1990.
Nick is survived by his son Stewart Nichols; granddaughter, Samantha Kimball; daughter-in-
law Lucy Nichols; granddaughter Evelyn Nichols; and grandson Walter Nichols. Chloe Nichols and Cameron Nichols preceded him in death.
A “remembrance” dinner will be held in Nick’s honor in the Metro Nashville Tennessee area at a later
date.
Nick will be buried next to Chloe at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Greenwood, Mississippi.
