Elvin Truman Barrier, 80, of Sheridan, Michigan, formerly of Savannah, passed away on Wednesday, December 31, at his residence. Elvin’s life was one marked by resilience, quiet strength, and a deep love for his family. Those who knew him best remember a man who was steady in his ways, caring in his actions, and unwavering in his devotion to the people he loved. Born into a large family as the second youngest of nine children, Elvin learned early the value of hard work and standing his ground. That determination stayed with him throughout his life. At just 18 years old, he left Savannah, Tennessee, and moved to Cicero, Illinois, taking a brave step toward building a future of his own. Three years later, he settled in Elkhart, Indiana, where he married the love of his life, Sandra, beginning a partnership that would span decades and countless memories. Not long after they married, Elvin proudly joined the U.S. Army. His military service was a point of deep pride, something he carried with him quietly but firmly, shaping his sense of discipline and responsibility. After his service, Elvin built a long and successful career in the RV manufacturing industry, where he worked as a plant supervisor. He was respected for his leadership, his straightforward approach, and his ability to see things through, even when the work was demanding. In 2021, Elvin and Sandra moved to Michigan, where he embraced retirement with the same purpose he brought to every chapter of his life. He found joy in working in his workshop, tending his garden, and spending time in the yard. Raising chickens became one of his simple pleasures, a reflection of his love for staying busy and connected to the land. Yet nothing brought him more happiness than time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Spoiling them came naturally, and those moments of laughter and closeness became some of his most treasured. Elvin is survived by his loving wife, Sandra; his daughter, Sonya Lund of Big Rapids, Michigan; his son, Keith Barrier of Morris Chapel, Tennessee; his grandchildren, Courtney (Jeremy) Buskirk of Carson City, Nevada, Madison (Josh) Smith of Berrien Springs, Michigan, and Keith Barrier Jr. of Elkhart, Indiana; his great-grandchildren, Josephine, Elizabeth, Layna, and Dalhia; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Audra and Ollie (Austin) Barrier; his sisters, Reba Rainey and Josephine White; and his brothers, Perry, Doty, Loyal, Doyle, Bobbie, and Troy. As the last remaining member of his siblings, Elvin carried their memories with him, honoring the family that shaped him. Funeral services were held at Simpson Family Funeral Home in Sheridan, Michigan, on Tuesday, January 6. Graveside services with military honors followed at Crystal Township Cemetery.
