Edith Franks

Edith Comilla Shelby Franks, of Savannah, was born in Hardin County, on Sept. 4, 1912, the daughter of Clyde Walker and Mary Frances Tucker Shelby.

She was united in marriage to Edward Archie Franks on Oct. 18, 1936. He preceded her in death on Sept. 13, 2000.

Mrs. Franks was an active member of the Big Ivy Cumberland Presbyterian Church and in later years became a member of the Olivet Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Big Ivy Home Makers FCE Club since 1933, the Hardin County Farm Bureau Women’s Chairman for several years, and writer of the Big Ivy News in The Courier from the mid 1950s until July 2002. She enjoyed and loved her family, friends and church.

Mrs. Franks departed this life on Thursday, Dec. 16, at the age of 98 years, 3 months, 12 days.

Mrs. Franks is survived by two daughters, Mary Sue Vickery and husband Clarence Junior and Laura Frances Rushing, all of Savannah; four grandchildren, Dennis Vickery and wife Angie, Belinda Fran Woods Sorrell and husband Bedford of Memphis, James Allen Woods and wife Anita of Savannah, Gregory Neil Woods and wife Karen of Lexington, Tenn.; six great-grandchildren, Carrie Ann Vickery, William Woods, Nicole Woods, Tucker Woods, BreAnna Jones, and Paige Jones; a brother, Clinton Shelby of Knoxville; two sisters, Tera Irvin and husband Jack of Mt. View, Mo., Lura Volner and husband Weldon of Memphis; a sister-in-law Louise Shelby of Savannah; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Lenoard and Milton Shelby.

Services were held on Sunday, December 19, at 1:30 p.m., at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah with Duwayne Pounds officiating. Burial was in the Lutts Cemetery at Lutts, Tenn.
