Clara Hieronymus, 100, died Saturday, Nov. 30, in Savannah at the home of her son. She was born Clara Booth Wiggins on July 25, 1913, in Mississippi.

She graduated cum laude from the University of Tulsa and earned a master’s degree in social work at age 22. She married her late husband, Sen. Hi Hieronymus, in 1933. Sen. Hieronymus passed away in 1994 after 57 years of marriage.

In 1950, they moved to Nashville with their two children. Moving from freelance writing assignments to her first regular column, “On the Arts”, she began a more than 30-year career with The Tennessean. Mrs. Hieronymus was an active volunteer on Wednesdays at Hardin Medical Center Nursing Home. She attended DAR and UDC meetings on a monthly basis.

Mrs. Hieronymus is survived by son Bruce Hieronymus and wife Martha of Savannah; daughter Jane Hieronymus Piller and husband David of Henderson, Ky.; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and very special friends Lee McCarty of Merigold, Miss., Dan Sullivan of Minneapolis, Minn., and Jane and Cecil Jones of Nashville. After developing an interest in Vanderbilt’s medical ethics work, she decided to donate her body for medical research.

No funeral is planned, but plans are pending for a memorial service in Nashville. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Nashville Children’s Theatre, the Clara Hieronymus Scholarship Fund through TPAC, O’More College of Design, West End United Methodist Church, Savannah Arts Commission, Pickwick United Methodist Church or your favorite charity.
