Archie L. Wolfe went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 22.
He was born on July 19, 1923, at Savannah, to Joe Cephus Wolfe and Lura Copeland Wolfe. Archie became the sixth child of a family of eight sons and three daughters. They all grew up in Savannah with most of them spending their entire lives in the general vicinity.
The U.S. Army drafted Archie into service in the Army Medical Corps for World War II. He crossed the Atlantic Ocean back and forth six times on a medical ship caring of wounded soldiers in the European Theater. Being at D Day, the invasion of Normandy, he would only say it was too much to talk about and shake his head.
Archie L. Wolfe married Nora Grace Helton Wolfe of Clifton on July 17, 1943.When Archie returned from the war he went back into the family business. The Wolfe family was well known for being in the restaurant business in Savannah for more than 60 years. Their restaurants were at several locations.
Archie and Grace loved all their customers. Some were regulars eating a meal at Wolfe Brothers several times a week. Buford Pusser just finished a cup of coffee with Archie when he got the call that led him to his final destination. Other customers always returned for a meal as they passed through Savannah on their annual vacation.
On Sunday mornings restaurant customers enjoyed listening to Grace sing solo at the Hopewell Baptist Church service broadcasted on the local radio station. Archie’s pride for Grace beamed. No one was ever turned away hungry that came to the back door of the restaurant requesting food. Many of these folks were fed for years.
After more than 15 years Wolfe Brothers Horse Traders Restaurant, the last restaurant, Archie owned closed when he retired. Located at the site today is Taco Bell.
Archie and Grace loved the Lord. They had their sons in church four times most every week. Their sons are Archie Landious Wolfe, Claude Daniel Wolfe, Buddy Leon Wolfe and Joseph Mark Wolfe.
Archie is now with loved ones that predeceased him to heaven, his parents; all of his brothers and sisters; his wife, Nora Grace Helton Wolfe; and three sons, Joseph Mark Wolfe, Buddy Leon Wolfe, and Claude Daniel Wolfe.
He leaves to cherish his memory, a son, Archie Landious Wolfe of Memphis; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Claude Daniel Wolfe (Sheryl) of Lebanon, Tennessee, daughter-in-law, Mrs. Buddy Leon Wolfe (Janey) of Savannah; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and many, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Archie L. Wolfe will be held on Sunday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m., at Hopewell Baptist Church, 9845 Hwy 128, Savannah, with Rev. Bobby Pickett officiating. The family request no flowers be sent. Memorials may be made to any fund to feed the hungry.
