Labor Day weekend cannon firing demonstrations at Shiloh National Park to mark unofficial end of summer
To commemorate the Labor Day weekend and the traditional end of summer, Shiloh National Military Park is presenting Civil War cannon firing demonstrations.
The Shiloh cannon crew will fire a 6-pounder field piece across the street from the park visitor center.
The weapon “was the most common field piece used in the battle of Shiloh,” said park Superintendent Catherine Bragaw. “Of the 251 cannon used in the battle, 96 of them were 6-pounders.”
The cannon firing demonstrations are scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 2, at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., and on Sunday, Sept. 3, at 11 a.m., 1 p.m and 2:30 p.m. Each 20 minute program interprets the weapons, projectiles, and procedures of Civil War artillery crews used during the war.
All programs are free and open to the public.
