Registration open for Shiloh Battlefield day camp for kids

Kids get a lesson in marching at Shiloh National Military Park.

Shiloh National Military Park is hosting a children’s day camp featuring Civil War-era related activities.
The day camp takes place Saturday, July 31 from 10 a.m. to noon and there is no charge to participate.
Children will make their own regimental flags, participate in a “School of the Soldier,” and use toy rifles to learn different Civil War marching drills, as well as the nine steps required to load and fire a Civil War musket.
“We are excited to present this opportunity to area children. We hope the fun filled, yet educational, activities will introduce young people to history and the importance of preserving places like Shiloh,” said park Superintendent Allen Etheridge.
Elementary age children, grades 1-5, are invited to participate in the day camp. The camp is outside so children need to come prepared. Participants should bring water, snacks, bug spray, sunscreen, and wear comfortable clothing for outdoor activities.
Participation is by registration only and is limited to 50 children, who will start the two-hour camp experience at the park visitor center. To register, call Shiloh Park at 731-689-5696.
