“We Will Rock You” opens this weekend at the Historic Savannah Theater

“We Will Rock You” finally hits the stage this weekend at the Historic Savannah Theater on Court Square, after being put off for a year due to COVID-19, and then 10 weeks of rehearsals.
This isn’t your parents’ or grandparents’ musical – although they’d probably recognize and enjoy the music. Make no mistake; We Will Rock You is a rockin’ good time, so come to this show prepared to be, well – rocked! And well rocked!
Just come, because the music is fantastic. Goose bump raising, even.
Produced by the local theatrical troupe Dreamweavers of West Tennessee, We Will Rock You is based on many of the greatest hits of British rock band Queen, set in a story written by Ben Elton.
Shows are Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., with a matinee on Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are available today and tomorrow at The Courier at 375 Main Street during regular business hours (the office closes on Fridays at 3 p.m.), and at the theater box office beginning one hour prior to show time.
The show itself is essentially a vehicle for people to get together and perform – loudly – an anthology of the music of Queen, with over 20 songs including “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Killer Queen,” “We Will Rock You,” “Somebody to Love,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “We Are the Champions,” “Don’t Stop Me Now,” and many more.
Set 300 years in the future, the musical tells the story of a group of renegades called Bohemians who struggle to restore the free exchange of thought, fashion, and live music. In this dystopian distant future, where everyone dresses, thinks and acts the same, musical instruments and composers are forbidden, and rock music is all but unknown.
We Will Rock You follows two revolutionaries as they try to save rock ‘n’ roll in an ever corporate-controlled world. In an age where algorithms predict our every preference, We Will Rock You is a musical for our time: a fist-pumping, foot-stomping anthem to individuality.
Although the play is set in the future, audiences will surely appreciate the overtones of what we’re beginning to see even in today’s society.
Having first opened in London in 2002, this show has been performed in at least 28 countries around the world for audiences numbering more than 16 million in total.
You can find a cast of characters in the show as well as other information, such as upcoming shows or how to join Dreamweavers, at www.drmwvrs.net on the Dreamweavers web site.
