THDA taking applications for COVID-19 rent relief

The Tennessee Housing Development Agency has opened an online portal allowing renters and landlords to apply for up to 12 months of cumulative rent and utility payments through its new COVID-19 Rent Relief Program.
The COVID-19 Rent Relief Program was developed to support renters struggling to pay rent, utilities or other home energy costs due to loss of income resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.
“The pandemic has had a tremendous impact on the livelihoods of countless Tennesseans,” THDA Executive Director Ralph M. Perrey said. “This program is designed to help people stay in their homes by covering eligible rent and/or utility costs they are unable to pay due to the challenges presented by COVID-19.”
THDA is administering this program in 91 of Tennessee’s 95 counties. Renters in those counties who have experienced economic hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and earn less than 80 percent of the area median income may be eligible for this assistance.
In Hardin, McNairy and Wayne counties, a four-person household making less than $43,850 annually could qualify for this funding, information on the application website shows.
To start the application process, a landlord or tenant should access the online portal at thda.org/covidrentrelief or call the COVID-19 Rent Relief Call Center at 844-500-1112.
Both landlords and tenants are required to provide verification and documentation as proof of eligibility. Once approved, payments will be made directly to the landlord or utility company on behalf of the tenant. Applicants can monitor the status of their application and payment through the online portal.
THDA said it received $384 million in direct funding from the U.S. Treasury to administer the emergency rent relief program which launched services on March 1.

Filed my application on 10/28/22. It is 12/20/22 Today and I’ve heard absolutely nothing. Had COVID twice and just had a heart attack on 12/14/22. I have 2 kids and I’m a single father. I NEED HELP PLEASE. The lady said she’s requested a viewer for my application on 12/12/22. Still nothing. Emergency help should not take this long. It’s a Emergency.

It takes forever. They do not give you all the information you need in order to recieve smooth process. You have to keep calling everyday and hear something new. I put my application in on March 1 and it is april 25 and no assistance has been given. My landlord even applied and still no assistance has been made. Absolutely saddening.

I’m a landlord with one renter. We filed for assistance back on March 2nd, we provided all the documents when filing. A month later we were requested to provide 4 documents we already had provided. After 2 phone conversations they grasped when I was telling them…that they already have the documents they are once again asking for. I communicated with the call center 2 times since and they had no answers for the delay other than it takes time. It’s now the 1st of May and my renter is past due another 2 months.

Hello. I applied for this assistance, having submitted all necessary documents (one month ago). Since then, my application is showing “Pending landlord information”, again, of which has been submitted. I have tried calling SEVERAL times a day for the past two weeks, only to experience LONG wait times (30 or more minutes), and opted to have my call returned. At this point, nothing has transpired. I understand the process may be hectic, as well as the calls, however, it doesn’t make it easier or less stressful to be waiting on a phone call.

    Suggestion (s)?

    Thank you.

Did you ever get approval? If so, how long did it take??

      • Martha on September 17, 2022 at 4:04 pm

To answer my own question for anyone needing this info…it takes over six months to be approved or not approved.
