Jimmy Haley, 82, of Counce, died on Friday, Oct. 9, at his residence in Counce.
He was born in Memphis, the son of the late Robert “Bob” Haley and Rosalie Luckett Robinson. He was united in marriage to Thelma J. Demery, who preceded her husband in death.
Mr. Haley honorably served his country in the United States Army. Following his time in the service, he went on to spend a total of 66 years working at a place he always loved being, the river. He worked many different jobs and held several titles during that time, including 15 years as a merchant mariner, before retiring from Southern Towing Company as a chief engineer.
He could play all kinds of instruments, including guitar, keyboard and harmonica. He played as a member of “The Three Amigos.”
He is survived by his children, Gayle Frances Cotner, James Aaron Haley and Michele Cotner; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Alice Faye Haley Harrell; stepchildren, Nancy Gifford, Phil Morris, Rick Morris, Lonnie Morris, Linda Sealy and Ronnie Morris and all their children and grandchildren; three step grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Clyde Robinson; two brothers, Robert Haley and Agustus Haley; and two sisters, Mary McMahon and Barbara Jean Pannell.
Services will be held on Friday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m., at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Savannah. Burial will follow in White Sulphur Cemetery at Pickwick Dam.
