79th annual World Championship Catfish Derby set for Saturday

The World Championship Catfish Derby, organized by Ryan Johnson and J.R. Sweat of Tennessee River Productions, is set for Saturday, Sept. 26.
The family event takes place in downtown Savannah, around Courthouse Square, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the catfish weigh-in starting at 3 p.m.
Spend the morning listening to bluegrass music, eating food vendors’ specialties, checking out arts and crafts booths and perusing the antique tractor show.
The excitement really picks up when teams started bringing in boatloads of live catfish to be weighed.
The catch-and-release event shows off the fishermen’s skills and allows the fish to go back in the Tennessee River after weigh-in. Regardless of the number of fish caught, the winners are determined by the combined weight of fish hauled in for the day.
