W.C. Cunningham was born on April 28, 1931, to the late Walter McKinley Cunningham and Zula Mae Moore Cunningham in Morris Chapel, where he was a lifelong resident.

Mr. Cunningham was drafted into the U.S. Army and served his country in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. He retired from the State of Tennessee Department of Transportation. He was a farmer and also served on the Hardin County Commission. After retirement he spent a lot of his time fishing, playing dominoes, and growing his prized tomatoes and watermelons. He was a member of House of Mercy in Morris Chapel. He taught Sunday school for 50 years – in his words “One of my greatest accomplishments.”

On Dec. 22, 1948, he married the love of his life Sara Ovada Nixon. They were married for 65 years. She preceded him in death on Dec. 3, 2013. From this marriage came a daughter Marilyn and a son Tim, three grandchildren Tracey, Mandy, and Chasity, seven great-grandchildren, Lauren, Addie, Miley, Brenden, Peyton, Gavin and Dylan. These children were his greatest joy in life.

Mr. Cunningham departed this life on Saturday, Dec. 14, at the age of 88 years, 7 months and 16 days.

Mr. Cunningham is survived by his daughter, Marilyn Cunningham Carter and her husband Doy of Morris Chapel; son, Tim Cunningham and his wife Tammy of Morris Chapel; grandchildren, Mandy Nixon and her husband Keith of Adamsville, Chasity O’Dea and her husband Sean of Rainier, Washington; great-grandchildren, Lauren Phillips, Addie Carter, Miley Carter, Brenden O’Dea, Peyton Carter, Gavin O’Dea and Dylan O’Dea; and a brother, Bobby Cunningham and his wife Brenda of Morris Chapel.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Mr. Cunningham was preceded in death by a very special grandson, Tracey Carter; a sister, Mary Ruth Hughes Cartwright; and a brother, W.D. Cunningham.

The family wishes to extend a very special thank you to friends at Savannah Healthcare for taking such good care of all of us, but most of all thank you for loving and caring for our precious Dad.

Services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 11 a.m., at House of Mercy Church in Morris Chapel. Burial followed in Morris Chapel Cemetery at Morris Chapel.
