Nelson “Baxter” Godwin, 90, of Savannah, died on Monday, Oct. 9.
He was born in Hardin County, the son of Lewis Valentine and Nancy Elizabeth Ward Godwin. He was united in marriage to Mary “Charlene” Crotts, who survives.
For 28 years, Mr. Godwinworked as a mechanic for Emmett Yeiser Chevrolet Company.  From there he moved to the Hardin County Highway Department where he worked for another seven and one-half years before retiring. 
He joined Campground United Methodist Church in 1959 and became a certified Methodist lay speaker in 1975. 
In addition to his wife Charlene, he is survived by his daughters, Vicki Janine Godwin Juckett of Maryville, Tennessee and Vonda Gay Godwin Johnson of Andersonville, Tennessee; sons, Kenneth Nelson Godwin of Savannah  and Tony Darrell Godwin of Maryville, Tennessee; brother Elvin “Pete” Lewis Godwin; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn Lois Godwin Reeves; and his brother, Buford Earl Godwin.
Services were held on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m., at Campground United Methodist Church in Savannah with Melinda Lee and Murray Gordon officiating. Burial followed in Campground Cemetery at Savannah.
