Clyde C. Smith (3-11-17)

Clyde C. Smith, 77, of Knoxville, died on Saturday, March 11.
He was born in Savannah, the son of the late Colonel and Margaret Caldwell Smith.
He graduated from the Tennessee School for the Deaf in Knoxville and Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C., with a degree in American studies.
As a young man he worked at The Courier on the linotype machine.
He received his Masters in Educational Administration from the University of Illinois. He was coach and teacher at the Illinois School for the Deaf for 28 years. He was a private certified pilot and co-founder of the Deaf Pilots Association. He bought a Cessna plane which he flew for many years.
He is survived by one son, Weldon Smith of Knoxville; daughters, Misty Lizarraga, Carolene Johnson of Ruckersville, Virginia, and Margie Hennessey of Maryland; stepsons, Ian Cody and Jon Cody; two sisters, Carolyn Willis of Durango, Colorado and Wanda Bowman of Kansas City, Missouri; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews.
