William “Bill” Hurst Jr. (9-28-14) service 10-31-14
Mr. William Robinson Hurst Jr. died at his home in Gulf Shores, Alabama, on Sept. 28, at age 90.
Preceded in death by his parents, William R. Hurst and Mamie Hinton Hurst of Savannah; his wife of 59 years, Stewart Lee Hurst; his second wife, Dolsie Doerr Hurst; and brothers, Warren Hurst and Joe Hurst; and sister-in-law, Luann Hurst.
He is survived by his son, David Hurst (Judy) of Gulf Shores; daughter, Mary Beth Hallen (Gary), grandsons, Ben Hallen (Katie) of Seattle, Washington and Ed Hallen of Boston; great-granddaughter, Campbell Hallen of Seattle, Washington; nieces and nephews Hope Salocks, Lynne Cowart, Rhoda Rahn, Steve Hurst, John Hurst and Peggy Majors.
Bill grew up in Savannah and upon high school graduation enlisted in the Army during WW2 and served as a fighter pilot.
Bill graduated from the University of Tennessee, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
He worked for the Department of Agriculture and retired as the assistant state soil conservationist for the state of Tennessee. After retirement, he was the deputy commissioner for Tennessee State Department of Conservation.
He was a member of Gulf Shores Presbyterian Church and Ancient Aviators of Gulf Shores.
A celebration of life service will held at Gulf Shores Presbyterian Church on Friday, Oct. 31.
