Howard Gordon Woodford departed this life on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the age of 86 years, 10 months, 27 days.
He was born in Savannah on Oct. 31, 1927, the son of the late Samuel Walker and Dollie Elizabeth Sharp Woodford. On June 7, 1952, he was united in marriage to Betty Jean Cox, who survives.
Mr. Woodford served his country from March 1, 1946 to May 31, 1947, in the United States Army with the 90th TC Harbor Craft Co. as a Private First Class. He retired as a riverboat captain with the Counce Corporation in Paducah, Kentucky. Mr. Woodford was a member of the First Baptist Church of Savannah.
In addition to his wife of 62 years, Betty of Savannah, he is survived by his children, Debbie Smith and her husband Robin of Savannah, Doug Woodford and his wife Donna of Killen, Alabama, David Woodford of Savannah and Diane Allen and her husband Stacy of Savannah; eight grandchildren, Matthew Smith, Jennifer Harrison, Leslie Wolfe, Jon Morton, Elizabeth Davis, Zach Woodford, Brandon Woodford and Bradley Woodford; and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Edward Woodford.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church, 145 Main Street, Savannah, Tennessee 38372.
Services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m., at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah with Michael Roach and Paul Woodford officiating. Burial followed in the Savannah Cemetery at Savannah.
