Shirley Abels (3-29-14) service 4-1-14

Shirley Young Abels departed this life Saturday, March 29, at the age of 66 years, 5 months, 4 days.

Shirley was born in Savannah Oct. 25, 1947, to Annie Juanita Crotts Young and the late LV Young. On Dec. 10, 1969, she was united in marriage to Otis Hershel Abels Jr. He preceded her in death Dec. 8, 1998.

Shirley was a member of Old Town Full Gospel Church. She had worked for Savannah Manufacturing, Clifton Manufacturing and retired from Savannah Health Care, where she had been employed for 15 years. Shirley loved to read, and loved sports, gardening and crafts.

She is survived by her daughter, Rhonda McGarity and her husband Dennis of Morris Chapel; son, Carey Abels of Greensburg, Ind.; grandchildren, Rachel West and her husband Rodney, Dennis “Denny” McGarity, all of Savannah; great-grandchild, Erin Kate West of Savannah; mother, Annie Juanita Young of Savannah; brothers, Wallace Young of Eads, Rabon Young, Billy Young, Doug Young and Bruce Young, all of Savannah; sisters, Marilyn Hill, Carolyn Holcombe, Neva Ireland and Charlotte Nance, all of Savannah.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Alton and Danny Young.

Services were held Tuesday, April 1, at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah with Ronnie Sanders and Grant Pavy officiating. Burial followed at Campground Cemetery in Hardin County.
