Martha Jane Wilkerson was born on Sept. 21, 1920, in Hardin County, the daughter of the late William Robert and Jinney Caroline Wilkerson. She was baptized at the old Hopewell Baptist Church in Savannah.

From 1946 until her retirement in 1982, she worked for the Brown Shoe Company in Savannah, gluing the upper part of the leather shoes together underneath the shoe, preparing them for her sister who would apply more glue and attach the sole. They worked side by side for many years.

Jane, as she preferred to be called, was a wonderful cook and an excellent housekeeper. Her desserts were always the best and her home so spotless you could have eaten off the floor. She enjoyed making quilts and collecting old glassware and family photos and memorabilia; her greatest love was for her family.

Miss Wilkerson departed this life on Oct. 19, at the Jackson Madison County General Hospital at the age of 93 years and 28 days.

She is survived by a sister, Jinney Thrasher and her husband, J.C. She also leaves numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six siblings, William Floyd Wilkerson, Rhoda Ethel Brewington, Ester Lee Wilkerson, Rose Ada Harrison, John Robert Wilkerson, and Otis Wilkerson.

Services were held on Monday, Oct. 21, at 1 p.m. at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah with Westley Hazel officiating. Burial was at the Graham Cemetery in Savannah.
