Gene Doran

Gene Doran was a loving husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed restoring antique A-Model Ford cars and trucks, woodworking, cattle, gardening and spending time with his family. He died on Saturday, April 13, at Hardin Medical Center in Savannah.

He shared 56 years of his 76-year life with his beloved wife, Nancy Jean Powell Doran. Together they raised four children, Angie Pitts and Cindy Matlock of Savannah; Denise Doran of Hollytree, Ala., and Jeff Doran of Tallahassee, Fla. Fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren were his pride and joy.

Gene also enjoyed hosting family gatherings at the old home place for his nieces and nephews and his sisters, Josephine Arnold of Decatur, Ala.; Jeanette Hunter of Huntsville, Ala., and Geneva Smith of Savannah.

His brothers, Billy Doran of Decatur, Ala., and Jimmy Doran of Savannah, preceded him in death, as did his parents, Edgar Couch Doran and Lillian Beatrice Hodge Doran.

Gene worked for Packaging Corporation of America for 30 years and was the owner of Doran Furniture and Appliance for seven years. He was a member of Wesley’s Chapel United Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge.

A celebration of Gene’s life was held Wednesday, April 17, at Shackleford Funeral Home in Savannah. He was laid to rest in the Doran Homeplace Cemetery on a hill overlooking the childhood home and family farm where he grew up and had lived his entire life.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to: Darryl Worley Cancer Treatment Center, 935 Wayne Road, Savannah, TN 38372 or Wesley’s Chapel United Methodist Church, 4740 Highway 128, Savannah, TN 38372.
