Lou Jane Matlock Essary departed this life on Saturday, Dec. 22, at the age of 76 years, 11 months, 19 days.

She was born in McNairy County, Tenn., on Jan. 3, 1936, the daughter of the late Reeder and Floy Lee Jones Matlock. On April 10, 1953, Lou Jane was united in marriage to Webb Essary, who survives. She had worked for Garan Manufacturing, Brown Shoe Company for 13 years, and Owens Corning for 9 years. Lou Jane loved going to ballgames and working in her yard. She had a big heart and took care of everybody. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Lou Jane is survived by her husband of 59 years, Webb Essary of Savannah; son, Freddy Essary and wife Susie of Savannah; daughter, Freeda Eaves of Savannah; grandchildren, Link Eaves and wife Amanda of Horn Lake, Miss., Jason Eaves of Counce, Jeremy Eaves of Savannah, Mary Ann Essary of Savannah and Leah Essary of Memphis; great-grandchildren, Traven and Shalanna Churchwell, both of Savannah; sisters, Martha Rinks and husband Pete of Crump, Oma Jean Ratliff and husband Brownie of Morris Chapel; brothers, Jerry Wayne Matlock of Selmer and Charles Ray Matlock of Milledgeville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lovie Dedrick; brothers, R.C., E.G., J.D., and Carl Joe Matlock.

Services were held on Monday, Dec. 24, at 1:00 p.m., at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah with Benny Taylor, Mike Hunter officiating. Burial followed in the Matlock Gardens at Morris Chapel.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
