Dorothy Elizabeth Heard Bigbie

Funeral Mass for Dorothy Elizabeth Heard Bigbie, 93, was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at St. Mary Catholic Church, officiated by Rev. Henry Roberson. Interment followed in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.

The family received friends from 6 to 7 p.m., at Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home preceding the Devotion of the Rosary which began at 7 p.m.

Daughter of the late James Frank and Genevieve Heard, Dorothy was born June 26, 1918 at Muskogee, Okla. She departed this life Wednesday, Aug. 3, at her Ardmore residence. In addition to her parents, a loving sister, Dessie, preceded her in death.

A graduate of Muskogee Central High School, the Class of 1936, Dorothy was a member of Delphic Literary Society and several social clubs. Following graduation she worked at Kunz Photography Studio and the Muskogee Daily Phoenix and the Times Democrat.

During World War II she married Eddie Bigbie of Savannah, they moved to Enid where she worked at the Enid News and Eagle newspaper. In 1946 the family moved to Ardmore. In Ardmore as she raised their five children, Dorothy was a Campfire and Girl Scout leader, and Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. A hands-on-mother, she was the taxi for all of her children and their friends; and attended all their events and activities.

She still found time to belong to several organizations, including Y-Wives, the Mimosa Garden Club and the Ivy Garden Club. She and Eddie were members of the Four Seasons Dance Club and were one of the founding couples of the 100 Dance Club.

A devout Catholic and member of St. Mary Catholic Church, she was a member of the Women of St. Mary, and once had been honored by being selected as "The Woman of the Year." She was a very faithful and active supporter of her church.

She is survived by her husband Eddie of the home; her children, sons, Biff Bigbie and his wife, Eleanor, Basil Bigbie and his wife, Suzanne; daughters, Debbie, Judy and Kathy Bigbie; grandson, Brian Bigbie and his wife, Amy, great-grandson, Sebastian; grandson, Evan Bigbie, granddaughter, Brooke Marshall and her husband, Bryan and granddaughter, Allison Bigbie; her very special niece, Lynn Kay Harder and her husband, John; also her caregivers, Susan, Rose, June, Karen, Inis, Freda, Lynn, Kay, Carolyn and John. Dorothy had many friends, she loved them all and all that knew her loved her.

Serving as bearers was Brian Bigbie, Evan Bigbie, Riley Beard, Sam Veazey and Lovell McMillin. Honorary bearers include John Snodgrass, Bill Stromberg, Charles Tanner and Richard Kearney.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the St. Mary Building Fund. Services have been entrusted to Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home.
