Mary Elizabeth Hitchcock
Mary Elizabeth Hitchcock was born June 27, 1927, in Hardin County, the daughter of William Jefferson Hitchcock and Savannah T. Scott Hitchcock. She departed this life on April 28, at the Hardin Medical Center in Savannah.
She graduated in 1945 from Central High School in Savannah as Class Valedictorian. She attended Florence State Teachers College, now the University of North Alabama, and received a Bachelor of Science degree.
Early in her teaching career, she taught in Mississippi and Alabama. She returned to Savannah where she taught Algebra for several years at Central High School. Later she moved to Memphis and taught math at the State Area Vocational Technical School and Hamilton Junior High School. After retirement, she returned to Savannah and built her home on a portion of the land where she was born.
She was a member of the National Education Association, Tennessee Education Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. She served both President and Treasurer of the local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was instrumental in reactivating the Hardin County Retired Teachers Association where she served as President for several years. She also served as the Hardin County Historian from 1989 to 2007. She was a long-standing member of Friends of the Library in Savannah and served on the Library Board. She was Chairman of the Hardin County Pictorial History Committee which published the first Hardin County Pictorial History Book in 1994.
Mary Elizabeth always took great pride in the success of her former students, following their accomplishments and achievements throughout her lifetime. She traveled extensively and visited all of the fifty states and six continents. She enjoyed many friends and contacts made during her travels, her teaching career and participation in educational and civic organizations.
She is survived by a host of cousins, friends and former students.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Jones W. Hitchcock and Russell F. Hitchcock.
Services was held on May 1, at 3 p.m., at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah, with Jim Chamblee, Le Duckworth, and Connie Wolfe officiating. Burial was in the Savannah Cemetery at Savannah.
