Glenda Ballantine (4-15-11) services 4-20-11)

Glenda Hughes Ballantine, 71, of Louisville, Ky., died April 15, at Jewish Hospital.

Glenda was born May 22, 1939, in Savannah. She graduated in 1963 from Murray State College, Murray, Ky., with a Bachelor of Science in health and physical education. In 1968 she received an Elementary Teaching Certificate from Ursuline College, Louisville, Ky.

Glenda first taught for three years at Jeffersonville Township School, Jeffersonville, Ind., where she started the first physical education program. She taught first grade at J.B. Atkinson School, Louisville, Ky., for three years. Her last position was at Highland Junior High School, Louisville, Ky., teaching physical education for grades 7, 8 and 9.

She was very active in the Democratic Party and traveled throughout the state for various candidates. Glenda was the personal representative of Lt. Gov. Martha Layne Collins to Governor John Y. Brown’s Rally for Women to support the Democratic ticket. She also served as a member of the Governor’s Mansion Restoration Committee during the administration of Gov. John Y. Brown.

Although teaching, politics and Kentucky basketball were high on her list of priorities, Glenda excelled at entertaining friends, family and community, and gave of her time and energy to the Woman’s Club of Louisville, the Louisville Orchestra, the English Speaking Union and Historic Homes Foundation. She was also a member of the Pendennis Club.

Glenda was preceded in death by her parents, Grace Ballard and Lee Hughes of Savannah, and her husbands, Charles Burge and William Ballantine.

She is survived by her sister-in-law Jennie S. Hibbs and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jack and Beverley Ballantine of Louisville. She was devoted to her Burge and Ballantine nieces and nephews: John Burge (Hannah) of Darien, Conn., Byron Burge (Missy) of Louisville, Ky., Lee Burge Sewell (Banks) of Birmingham, Ala., Tab Ballantine of Anchorage, Alaska, Dair Ballantine Mathistad (Tim) of Louisville; Brigid Ballantine Haney (David) of Charleston, W.Va.; Joe Ballantine (Selena) of Louisville; John T. "Jay" Ballantine Jr. of Boulder, Colo., Clay Ballantine, M.D. of Asheville N.C., Douglas Ballantine (Mariam) of Louisville, Susan Ballantine Molony (Tom) of Greensboro, N.C., and Karen Weilacher of Los Angeles, Calif. She is also survived by many grand nieces and grand nephews from the East Coast to the West Coast.

A Mass was celebrated at ten o’clock Wednesday, April 20, at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church, Payne and Clifton Streets; Louisville, with interment at Cave Hill Cemetery.
