It is always a pleasure to recommend movies to anyone who asks me about what to see. They do not want to waste their money on something they will not like. I decided to make a few suggestions to moviegoers to be on the lookout for in the next few months. Here is a brief synopsis of some of the movies coming to a theater near us in the near future. Just remember one person’s pleasure just might be another person’s regret. Not everyone loves movies as I do, and of course, I do not like some movies as reviews have revealed. That being said, here are a few suggestions.July 1 – Larry Crowne starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts PG-13 Hanks is a blue collar worker who loses his job in the recent recession. He decides to enter college to purse a degree in order to secure his future job. His speech teacher in college is Julia Roberts. Spark fly – Enough said.
July 8 – Zookeeper PG. Comedy starring Kevin James as a compassionate zookeeper. However, his job seems mundane to the ladies. He decides to leave his job. However, the tenants (animals) at the zoo decide they want him to stay, because of his love for animals and his kindness. They reveal their uncanny ability to speak and give him advice. Hey, the trailer looked like entertainment to me.
July 15 – Winnie the Pooh a Disney Film. Need I say more – Take the kids - They will insist on seeing this one.
July 22 – Friends with Benefits, Justin Timerlake, Mila Kunis, Patricia Clarkson. A couple trying to avoid relationships, but they have an attraction to each other. How about another Romantic Comedy.
July 29 – Cowboys and Aliens Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Oliva Wilde. Cowboys must fight Aliens in the old west. I have to say that I am looking forward to this one. A film that has a link to the old west gets my attention every time.
August 5 – Rise of the Planet of the Apes – James Franco, Freida Pinto John Lithgow. This appears to be a prequel to Planet of the Apes.
August 12 – The Help PG–13 Emma Stone, Jessica Chastain, Viola Davis Based on the book The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Set in Mississippi during the 60’s.
August 18 – One Day PG-13, Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess. A couple meet on the night of their graduation from college. For the next 20 years they continue to get together on the anniversary of their first meeting to talk about their lives.
August 26 – Colombiana Zoe Saldana, Jordi Molla, Lennie James. A female assassin becomes a professional while seeking revenge on an episode from her past.
August 31. The Debt, R, Helen Mirren, Sam Worthington, Jessica Chastain Jesper Christensen. Here is another one I am looking forward to viewing. In 1966 a team hunted a Nazi war criminal. In 1997, the team is told the war criminal may be still alive. The hunt begins again. Reminds me of the film “Munich.” Israel has the right idea. America should follow suit as they did recently. In place of starting wars all over the world, go after the culprits.
September 2 - Apollo 18, In 1972, Apollo 17 along with a manned mission to the moon was supposedly our last mission to the moon. However, a conspiracy theory says we sent astronauts back to the moon a year later. Did they find something? Did they really travel to the moon? I guess we will just have to watch the movie and decide for ourselves.
September 16 – Drive, R, Based on the book by James Sallis. A Hollywood stunt driver moonlights as a getaway driver for criminals. It has potential of being a thrill ride filled with tension.
Straw Dogs, R, James Marsden, Kate Bosworth, Alexander Skarsgard. A young couple moves to Mississippi from California. They are looking for a quiet life. They have a surprise coming to them. Based on the original movie with Dustin Hoffman and Directed by Sam Peckinpah.
September 23, Moneyball, Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill PhillipSeymour Hoffman. Based on the true story about the Oakland A’s. Recruiting players that are not top notch stars. The team has a tight budget, so they have to find an answer.
September 30, Dreamhouse, Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts. A couple leave New York to live in a house in a town in New England. A murder took place in the house. It appears strange things are about to happen.
