Morning Glory

A Cranky Cantankerous Comedy As Harrison Ford Stays Mad 99 Percent of the Time
Morning Glory, PG-13, ***, Rachel McAdams, Harrison Ford, Diane Keaton, Patrick Wilson, Matt Malloy. Paramount Pictures film. Director Roger Michell. Length: 110 minutes.

“Morning Glory” is an interesting story about the passion for the work that one does. Becky (Rachel McAdams) wants to be a news television executive producer. She has the desire and abilities. She just needs a chance to hone her talents and develop her skills.
She is waiting for her ship to come in.
The opportunity arrives when she is offered a job as Executive Producer of Daybreak at a television station in New York. Daybreak is more about fluff than real news reporting, but it is time to learn the ropes and prove she can deliver the goods.
Things are not looking too sunny for the show as she begins her work. Fortunately or unfortunately, Mike Pomeroy (Harrison Ford) is under contract at the station where she works.
He was her idol when she was growing up and watching the evening news. A very successful news reporter Pomeroy has an attitude. He is cantankerous and known to some as the third worst person in the world. Sounds like a Keith Olberman analogy.
Becky demonstrates her willingness to make tough decisions when she fires the co-anchor of the morning show. Now she must find a replacement.
Since Pomeroy is under contract, she insists that he anchor the morning news with Colleen Peck (Diane Keaton). If he is offered a job, he must take it or lose his money with the network.
Since Pomeroy is so difficult to work with, Becky soon realizes it is going to be very difficult to obtain any cooperation from him.
Everyone knows his attitude. Although they respect him, it is difficult to have a conversation with him. His ego gets in the way of his people skills.
Becky is a workaholic just like Pomeroy was at one time. Pomeroy has all kinds of awards, and he has met lots of people as he likes to remind Becky.
Becky’s love interest is Adam (Patrick Wilson). She is on the fast track while he is more laid back.
Ernie (Matt Malloy) is the weatherman. Becky uses him to up the ratings. However, he is put through torture through her insistent on over the top escapades to energize their viewers. Several very funny scenes involve this weatherman.
“Morning Glory” is a movie about striving for success and self satisfaction with one’s job. Becky is trying to convince Pomeroy to open up and tell more about his life. One scene close to the end has Pomeroy relating a weekend in Italy, and how he learned to cook an exotic egg dish - frittata. The story made me want to try a plate of frittata. He seems to lighten up as he is telling this story. How he learned to make this exotic dish is very interesting.
The story has some great moments. Pomeroy has to adjust to getting older. He is becoming cantankerous and depressed thinking about his past accomplishments and what is going on now. He does not see much for him in the future. We all must have something to do that gives us a sense of accomplishment.
Maybe Becky might be part of the answer to rejuvenate his attitude. I recommend this movie for laughs and an engaging story.
