Killers

Killers Runs Short on Appeal
Killers, PG-13, *1/2, Ashton Kutcher, Katherine Heigl, Tom Selleck, Catherine O’Hara. Katalyst Film. Director Robert Luketic. Length 100 minutes.
“Killers” is a movie that has a few moments of laughter, but it lacks continuity and engagement. The editing and overall story loses its strength in the first 15 minutes. Jen (Katherine Heigl) is on a flight to Nice Italy. She is accompanied by her father Mr. Kornfeldt (Tom Selleck) and her mother Mrs. Kornfeldt (Catherine O’Hara).
Mr. Kornfeldt is a pilot, and Mrs Kornfeldt appears to be an alcoholic. She is rarely seen without a drink in her hand.
Jen has just broken up with her boyfriend. She hopes to put his memory out of her thoughts. It happens instantly when she meets Spencer (Ashton Kutcher) in an elevator the first day she arrives at Nice Italy.
Of course, she falls head over heels for him, and the feeling is mutual. Spencer immediately quits his job. Incidentally, he is a contract killer for a clandestine agency. Possessing the same license to kill that James Bond has. His job is justified by believing that everyone he eradicated deserved to die.
The story then takes up three years later in the United States. They are happily married, and each one working at legitimate jobs. He has not told her about his previous job.
The movie is a spoof on hit men, clandestine operations, and secret agencies that do not allow their employees to retire.
The editing just did not track well with the story. It has a few giggles but not enough to bump up the rating.
Basically, it is a satire with the tongue buried deeply within the cheek. “Killers” is a movie to be taken with a large grain of salt to give it more flavors. The smorgasbord of over the top formulaic plot needs lots of seasoning for everyone viewing the movie.
The audience will not have any trouble figuring out what will happen, and who is involved. The mystery is just not much of a secret.
There are more than enough fist fights, gun battles, car chases, and over the top clichés. One could call this a dramedy with very little drama or comedy.
If the reader decides to see this farce, just take the route of a log floating down the river. Let the stream take the viewer. There is absolutely no need to navigate the story. No thought processes are necessary. This over the top movie may be something a few people will want to view in order to eat some popcorn, get in out of the humid weather, and not have to use any brain cells for 100 minutes.
Having written some harsh words about this one, it might appeal to some viewers. It just did not have the charm I was expecting. Oh well, the summer entertainment season at the theater is just beginning. I still have hope for some pleasurable movies to open at a theater near all of us soon. That is all for now. Over and Out.
