The Losers
The Losers Become Winners Without Winning The Gold MedalThe Losers, PG-13, ***1/2, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Chris Evans, Idris Elba, Columbus Short, Oscar Jaenada, Jason Patric. Warner Bros. film. Director Sylvain White. Length: 98 minutes.
“The Losers” is an action packed movie with lots of humor. It has satire, sarcasm, puns, and scenes that include dialogue with tongue-in-cheek irony as the audience is entertained. With wit and enough action to satisfy any thrill seeking audience, it goes above many action films.
It begins in Bolivia as an army team prepares to destroy a drug dealer and his gang. Suddenly, something happens and the group of five military men changes their mind about destroying the location of the drug dealers.
The team of men are Clay ( Jeffrey Dean Morgan) Jensen (Chris Evans) Rogue (Idris Elba) Pooch (Columbus Short) and Cougar (Oscar Jaenada). These men have expertise that keeps them working together.
The teams expertise ranges from control, destroy, technology, sniper, and all the necessary talents for warriors in the 21st Century to posses.
They gave coordinates to a pilot who is about to destroy the facilities where the drug dealers are living. Since the group of soldiers changed their minds, they try to stop the mission. However, their superior will not allow that to happen.
As a result a horrible event happens, and the soldiers have to pretend they have been killed. This is where the story picks up on more action.
Clay is the leader of the group. As the team hides out in Bolivia a mysterious woman, Aisha (Zoe Saldana), approaches Clay with a plan to help get their lives back.
Max (Jason Patric) is responsible for the horrible incident that happened during their mission. She tells Clay she knows how to find Max. This can give the team the opportunity to set everything straight, and of course, to get revenge.
Max is a cold hearted individual. His ego is overdeveloped, and he enjoys cruelty. He is a different kind of villain in many ways. The arrogance he posses is intimidating to everyone around him.
It seems that Clay has a history with women in his life. This seems to always get him in trouble. Well, everyone has to have a weakness. If one has to have a weakness, I cannot think of a better one. Will this plan be another time for Clay to get in trouble?
Max has a horrible strategy. He travels to several countries around the world to help get his diabolical plan working. He uses sarcasm in just about every sentence he utters. This brings a little light comedy to this action packed movie. Jensen as the communication and technical expert also brings humor to the movie. He actually steals the show with his flippant attitude.
The movie is serious and funny. The mixture works in this very interesting plot. It brings some originality to a genre that needs some life. It is not like watching a typical action movie. “The Losers” has enough drama and comedy mixed with an interesting story to give life to the action movies that will surely be coming our way in the next few months.
I am confident we will see a sequel to this one. Maybe it will be called “The Winners.”
I recommend the movie for action, comedy, and story. A couple of surprises and camaraderie among the team brings it above the usual action flick. Some of the surprises are traitorous. The comedy in the movie is sometimes laugh-out-loud funny.
