Evalee Gurley

Evalee Austin Gurley, 98, of Savannah, died Sunday, Nov. 29, in Savannah.

She was born in Hardin County, daughter of the late Waymon Reese and Callie Thomas Austin. She was united in marriage to Orlando B. "Red" Gurley, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Gurley was a retired school teacher. She taught at the Park Avenue Elementary School in Milan, Tenn. and North Elementary in Savannah.

She was a member of Wesley’s Chapel United Methodist Church, and a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

Mrs. Gurley wrote a book:Journey of the Heart. She represented Hardin County in Nashville at the Tennessee Bicentenial Celebration in 1996.

Services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 11 a.m., at Wesley’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Savannah with Jim Wright officiating. Burial will follow in the Wesley’s Chapel Cemetery at Savannah.

She is survived by a sister, Lola Austin Roberts of the Nixon Community; one stepdaughter, Louise Sweat of Tupelo, Miss.

She was also preceded in death by five sisters, Sylvia Green, Virgie White, Thelma Matthews, Lyla Moore and Edith Lay; and two brothers, Roy and Glen Austin.
