Lamar Freeman A former resident of Holland Creek Road in Savannah, Mr. Freeman was born Jan, 9,1924, in Arab, Ala. and died Oct. 28, in Mentone, Ala. A man of character, he was a modern day explorer and world traveler who led an adventurous life. When he was a child, he was part of the Freeman Family Variety Show that traveled the eastern U.S, and when a teen-ager, he was a professional jazz musician in New Orleans. He served on the Pickaway in the Navy amphibians during World War II and fought in the Pacific Theatre including Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He attended the University of Georgia, almost earning a PhD in economics. He was a teacher, was the youngest county agricultural agent ever in Georgia, built the first park in the nation under the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation’s banner, was a pioneer in community development, was a member of the trio that developed the concept of an alpine village for Helen, Ga. was a co-owner of a 2,400 acre peach, pecan and cattle operation in Eatonton, Ga. and was a master mariner, He was chosen Georgia’s Man of the Year, Outstanding Agricultural Agent for Georgia, Chairman of the Oconee Area Planning Commission, County Agent Chairman for Georgia and a member of the National 4-H Board and numerous civic organizations. At age 47, he retired from the University system and did commercial lobster diving off the Bahamas and the Florida Keys, captained his 50-foot trawler and did long-line fishing and charter work in the Gulf of Mexico. He went to Alaska 37 years ago when the state was truly "the last fontier" and developed an outback farm, did commercial halibut fishing in the Gulf of Alaska and gold mined. He divided his time between Alaska and the southeast where he developed a travel trailer park in Guntersville, Ala. and was co-owner of horse and cattle ranches in Alabama and Tennessee. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Moore Freeman of Mentone, Ala., a son Kenneth Freeman of Lacey Springs, Ala., a daughter Dr. Lyn Freeman Welton of Anchorage, Alaska, chosen children, George, Asenah and JeRevien Richeson of San Diego, Calif., three grandchildren, two brothers, a sister and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral was Sunday, Nov. 1, and internment was at Brashiers Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery in Arab, Ala.
