Edith Lay (8-30-09) services 9-1-09

Edith Austin Lay, 90, of Savannah, died Sunday, Aug. 30. She was born in Hardin County, the daughter of the late Waymon Reese and Lucy Callie Thomas Austin. She was united in marriage to Jack Lay, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Lay had worked for Brown Shoe Company as a seamstress before retiring. She was a member of the Nixon Community and Wesley’s Chapel Church. Services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at Wesley’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Savannah with Jim Wright officiating. Burial was in the Wesley’s Chapel Church Cemetery at Savannah. She is survived by four daughters, Shirley Mathis of Chattanooga, Tenn., Myra Gates of Lafayette, Ga., Jackie Matlock and Sharon Richter both of Savannah; two sisters, Evalee Gurley and Lola Roberts, both of Savannah; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Sylvia Green, Virgie White, Thelma Matthews and Lyla Moore; two brothers, Roy and Glen Austin; two grandchildren, one great-grandchild.
