Howard Evans
Howard Evans was born in Hardin County, on May 2, 1938, the son of the late John Young and Lantie Dean Rose Evans.
On Sept. 1, 1961, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Higgins, who survives.
Mr. Evans retired from American Commercial Barge Line in Jefferson, Ind., where he was a river boat captain for 48 years. He had a boat christened with his name. He had served in the Navy from 1957–1961. He enjoyed spending time with his fellow boatmates. Mr. Evans enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and landscaping. He was an avid reader, enjoyed history, and loved playing with his grandchildren. He was a member of Mount Herman Baptist Church.
Mr. Evans departed this life on Thursday, Feb. 12, at the age of 70 years, 9 months, 10 days.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Evans is survived by two sons, Jeffrey Howard Evans of Savannah and Paul Evans and his wife Misty of Chapel Hill, Tenn.; a daughter, Jennifer Dickey and husband Gary of Selmer; two brothers, Rex Evans of Clifton and Jack Evans of Savannah; two sisters, Robbie Ricketts of Olive Hill and Ruth Haggard of Savannah; five grandchildren, Megan Johnson, Hannah Evans, Sarah Grace Evans, Emma Evans, and Catherine Dickey.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Royal Evans, J.E. Evans, James Evans and Curtis Evans; two sisters, Marline Dean Evans and Johnnie Maxine Evans.
Services were held on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 1:30 p.m., at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah with Artie Rivers officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery at Hardin County.
