Lawmakers hoping to pass immigration reform
State lawmakers concerned with illegal immigration are introducing everything from an Arizona-style enforcement bill to requirements that drivers license exams be in English. With Republican majorities in both the House and Senate, those measures have their best chance yet of becoming law. But Republicans are less than united on what measures to pass and how.
Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey recently expressed concern that immigration bills should not dominate the session. Both he and Gov. Bill Haslam support the idea of a single, comprehensive bill.
But Rep. Joe Carr, who heads a House task force on illegal immigration, said no one has consulted him on the idea.
He plans to file three bills this week. They include an Arizona-style bill that would empower local law enforcement to question suspects on whether they are legally in the country.
